A lovely lookout over the Wollongong area, with a lovely large picnic area and nearby walks for those wanting to stretch their legs further.

This heavily trafficked location is found at the end of an unnamed road near Panorama House, just off the Princess Highway in Maddens Plains.

While unnamed, the road is well-signed directing you to Bulli Lookout and navigation systems will direct you when to turn if your location is set to Bulli Lookout.

Often overshadowed by its more popular nearby neighbour – Sublime Point Lookout – Bulli Lookout offers similar views over the Wollongong area, along the Illawarra Escarpment and out to the Pacific Ocean.

There is also a cute wishing well near the lookout, where donations are given to the Australian Red Cross.

The lookout is situated right next to Hopetoun Park, a lovely large picnic area nestled within the bush, with BBQs, covered picnic tables and toilets, as well as plenty of space to throw out a picnic rug on the grass.

Those wishing to stretch their legs further have multiple options, including a walk along the top of the escarpment between Bulli Lookout and Sublime Point Lookout (and beyond).

There is also the more challenging Sublime Point Track (Grade 4, rated ‘Hard’) that steeply descends the escarpment to Austinmer, via a series of ladders and staircases through lush rainforest, however this is better started from Sublime Point Lookout.

Track: The lookout is just a very short stroll from the car park along a concrete path, it well-signed and easy to follow.

Difficulty: The track is suitable for all fitness levels and is wheelchair accessible. While the lookout is well-fenced, it is a very large drop on the other side, so caution is required and children should be supervised at all times.

Direction: This is an out-and back track that returns the way it came.

getting there

The lookout is located at the end of an unnamed road (take the exit for Panorama House), just off the Princess Highway in Maddens Plains, 10.25 hours drive south of Brisbane or 1.25 hours drive south-west of Sydney.

Navigation systems will direct you when to turn off the highway if your location is set to Bulli Lookout.

The car park is quite large and is typically ample for how trafficked the location is.

best time to go

The walk can be completed year-round.
