A rewarding hike to one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Sunshine Coast region, including rock pools, foot bridges and lookouts.

The heavily trafficked walk begins from the Kondalilla Falls Picnic area, descending through the picnic grounds, equipped with barbecues, picnic tables and toilets, to the start of the trail.

The walk to the top of the falls is an easy stroll through lush forest, via wooden boardwalks, paved switchbacks and stairs. The footbridge and stairs at the Picnic Creek waterfall are particularly scenic.

There are fantastic views of the rainforest valley from Obi Obi Lookout, as well as from the top of the falls at the rockpools.

The natural rock pools at the top of the falls are the perfect place for a swim during warmer months, with a beautiful small waterfall flowing from Skene Creek.

Continue to the base of the falls, descending into the valley to the rainforest floor via steps and switchbacks. On the way down there is a constructed lookout with stunning views back towards the falls.

The base of the 80m high Kondalilla Falls are majestic, even during drier months. However, viewing the falls after recent rain gives new meaning to the name of the falls, with Kondalilla being the local Aboriginal term for 'rushing waters'.

The loop continues, crossing the creek before climbing via stone stairs and a series of switchbacks which lead back to the rock pools at the top of the falls.

The Picnic Creek Circuit loop can also be added onto the return trip to the picnic area.

Track: Graded and well-signed, with steps, railings and paths at times. The track is easy to follow. The descent and ascent into and out of the forest is via a number of steep switchbacks and steps.

Difficulty: The track involves a large number of stairs and steep switchbacks. A reasonable level of fitness is required, however most people can complete this walk provided they take their time.

Direction: While the track can be completed in either direction, anti-clockwise is recommended.

getting there

The trail starts from the Kondalilla Falls Picnic Area on Kondalilla Falls Road in Flaxton, 1.5 hours drive north of Brisbane.

Parking is ample, however the walk can be very busy, especially on weekends, so it can fill up.

best time to go

The walk can be completed year-round.

An early start on a weekend or a weekday visit is advised.

Like all walks involving waterfalls, they are best done after recent rain, however be sure to check the Queensland Parks website for updates regarding flooding and track closures.

Remember, whenever venturing into the outdoors, practice the Leave No Trace principles and be considerate of others. This means: dispose of your waste properly, don't remove things or move things from their natural position and respect all wildlife. Also be sure to plan ahead and adequately prepare for any adventure.
