An off-track hike for experienced bushwalkers only, requiring substantial navigation and scrambling skills, via the old Hole-in-the-Wall to the summit of Mount Castle.
This hike is for experienced hikers only, with a high level of fitness, off-track navigation skills and the capability of scrambling in exposed areas, essential.
There are tape makers, but these are sparse and can be difficult to locate, so should not be relied upon.
The hike includes a bush bash through the forest to a spectacular lookout taking in Mount Castle and the valley below, as well as the razorback ridge to be traversed to get to Mount Castle.
The ridge provides incredible uninterrupted views towards Lake Moogerah and its associated peaks, as well as Mount Barney.
The old Hole-in-the-Wall (now collapsed) is passed along the ridge, which requires a few sections of climbing up and down (approximately 3-5 metres).
Once at the foot of the mountain, or more correctly about half way up, it is a bit of a choose-your-own-adventure, as you follow goat tracks as they steeply zig-zag up the mountain side to the summit.
It is highly recommended that only experienced hikers, with off-track navigation skills and high levels of confidence with scrambling in exposed areas, attempt this walk. There are particular sections of this hike that would be dangerous for less experienced hikers.
getting there
Given the nature of this walk, a GPX file and precise directions are not provided.
best time to go
This walk can be completed year round. The walk is very exposed to the sun at times, so an early start is recommended.
Given the isolated nature of the walk, it is not recomended during times of the year when bushfires may occur.
