A great introductory off-track hike up Northbrook Creek, through a beautiful gorge, to an impressive little waterfall and rock pool.

This heavily trafficked hike starts from a small car park off of Northbrook Parkway, 2.7 kms downhill from the Wivenhoe Lookout.

Carefully cross the road, jump the guardrail and walk towards the hairpin turn, locating the well-worn path to your left, which descends quite quickly to the creek.

Once at the creek, turn left and head upstream. For the most part, there are well-worn paths to the side of the creek, however it is also fun to rock hop at parts, given that you will inevitably get wet on this walk (a waterproof bag is essential).

The track continues through stunning gorges and past hulking boulders, with the occasional section impassable without a short swim or trundle through knee to waist deep water. The longest swim (only 30 odd metres) is necessary just before the main gorge and rock pool.

The waterfall is lovely and the rock pool perfect for a swim. If jumping from the rocks be sure to check depth and for debris, especially after recent rain.

The waterfall can be scaled for further venturing up the creek, with the most scenic section immediately above the main gorge. Care is needed when scaling the waterfall.

To return, simply retrace your steps.

Track: Technically an off-track hike, however there is a well-worn path most of the way. The walk is completely in the gorge, with no branches of the creek to navigate, making it near impossible to get lost. That said, there is no signage on this walk.

Difficulty: This hike is recommended for semi-experienced hikers with some rock-hopping and scrambling skills required.

Direction: This is an out-and-back track which returns the way it came.

getting there

The trail starts from a small car park off of Northbrook Parkway, 2.7 kms downhill from the Wivenhoe Lookout, in Dundas (near Mount Glorious), 1.5 hours drive northwest of Brisbane.

The car park is small and can become extremely busy on weekends.

best time to go

The walk can be completed year-round.

An early start on a weekend or a weekday visit is advised.

The track is best completed after recent rain, however, this walk should not be completed too soon after recent rain, as Northbrook Creek has a tendency to become swollen and may be prone to flash flooding, which, given it is in a gorge would be incredibly dangerous.
