Palm Creek Circuit & Sandstone Overhang

A fascinating walk through rainforest and eucalypt forest past cascades and a sandstone overhang.
This lightly trafficked walk starts from the Blackbean day-use area on National Park Road in Ravensbourne.
The walk begins in the rainforest from the rear of the day-use area.
The loop track is accessed via the third right branch off the main Buaraba Creek Track trail (first and second are the start and end of the Rainforest Circuit).
This loop takes you through a mix of rainforest and eucalypt forest, past towering Sydney blue gums and piccabeen palms.
The walk crosses Palm Creek a number of times, including near a lovely cascade that flows after rain. A small waterfall beside the track also flows after rain.
The side-track to the Sandstone Overhang, through eucalypt forest, is a must-do. The overhang is approximately 100 metres in length, and although not overly high, is an interesting feature.
Look at the patterns in the stone in the cave sections, as well as evidence of birds, snakes and other animals having sought shelter.
After rejoining the main trail again, head left back to the starting point.
The walk is suitable for families with children or those with minimal time in the area.
For those looking to stretch their legs more, the track can be combined with the Rainforest Circuit and/or the Buaraba Creek Track.
The day-use area has drop toilets, wood BBQs and both covered and open picnic tables. There is no camping or rubbish bins at the day-use area.
Track: Graded and well-signed, the track is easy to follow, with only a moderate amount of elevation change.
Difficulty: The track is suitable for all levels of fitness.
Direction: This is a loop track that branches off a main out-and-back track.
getting there
The trail starts from the Blackbean day-use area on National Park Road in Ravensbourne, approximately 1.75 hours drive west of Brisbane.
Parking is ample for how trafficked the walk is.
best time to go
The walk can be completed year-round.
Like any walk involving creeks, it is best done after recent rain. However, if completing after recent rain, be sure to check the Queensland Parks website for updates regarding flooding and track closures.
Remember, whenever venturing into the outdoors, practice the Leave No Trace principles and be considerate of others. This means: dispose of your waste properly, don't remove things or move things from their natural position and respect all wildlife. Also be sure to plan ahead and adequately prepare for any adventure.
