A popular walk through lovely bushland to the typically dry, but nonetheless impressive, Simpson Falls.

This heavily trafficked walk starts from the Simpson Falls picnic area (at the very end of the road, or extend the walk via the path adjacent to the car park).

Start the walk along the paved track through the park, which features picnic tables and BBQs and some informational displays that are great for kids.

After crossing the footbridge head left through the park to the signed trail head.

Follow the graded path alongside West Ithica Creek, which is typically dry unless there has been substantial recent rain.

There is a short side-track with views upstream to another footbridge which is quite nice.

Return to the main trail and ascend over the footbridge and multiple sets of stairs. There are excellent views to cascading sections of the creek, which come alive after heavy rainfall.

A top-down view of Simpson Falls awaits from the constructed metal viewing deck. Although typically dry unless there has been substantial recent heavy rain, the falls are nonetheless impressive.

When at the viewing deck, be sure to look above the tree lines, for glimpses of the city.

From the viewing deck, retrace your steps to return. Note that the walk can be extended to include the Eugenia Circuit (2.8 kms return) or Stringybark Track (1.1 kms return).

The track is particularly nice in late winter and spring when wildflowers burst to life and add a splash of colour to the walk.

The falls and creek come alive after significant heavy rainfall, however it should be noted that this typically only lasts for a few days before drying out again.

Track: A mix of paved and graded tracks, including a number of stairs. The walk is well-signed and easy to follow, but be sure to turn around and retrace your steps at the viewing deck unless doing a longer track.

Difficulty: The track has some elevation but is suitable for all fitness levels if you take your time.

Direction: This is an out-and-back track that returns the way it came. The walk can be extended to include the Eugenia Circuit (2.8 kms return) or Stringybark Track (1.1 kms return)

getting there

The trail starts from the very end of the Simpson Falls picnic area off Sir Samuel Griffith Drive in Mount Coot-Tha (across from Simpsons Road), 20 minutes drive west of Brisbane.

There is ample parking, but this location is very busy on weekends given the picnic area.

best time to go

The walk can be completed year-round.

An early start on a weekend or a weekday visit is advised.

The track is especially scenic after significant heavy rain, when the falls and creek flow, however be sure to check the Brisbane City Council website for updates regarding flooding and track closures.
