A short, family-friendly walk to the Emigrant Creek dam wall, through lush forest that is well worth doing when visiting Killen Falls.
This moderately trafficked walk starts from a small car at the end of Killen Falls Road in Tintenbar.
The track starts from near the top of the car park and involves paved paths and wooden boardwalks.
Along the walk, informative signage tell of the importance of the area to the local Widjabul people, as well as the water cycle and the dam technology.
From the constructed viewing platform at the end of the walk, look down at the Emigrant Creek Dam wall, which stands at 13m high and 140m long.
The dam, which has a capacity of 820 mega litres, was constructed between 1967 and 1968 and updated in 2022 and supplements the Rocky Creek Dam and Wilsons River, which provide water to Lennox Head and Ballina.
Track: The track is relatively flat, along paved paths and wooden boardwalks. The walk is well-signed and easy-to follow.
Difficulty: The track is short and suitable for all fitness levels and is wheelchair accessible.
Direction: This is an out-and back track that returns the way it came.
getting there
This walk starts from a small car at the end of Killen Falls Road in Tintenbar, 2.25 hours drive south-east of Brisbane.
The car park is very small, with limited street parking, and is not suitable for large vehicles, such as caravans and motorhomes.
best time to go
The walk can be completed year-round.
The area is prone to flooding during or after rain, so be careful if visiting at these times and never proceed into flooded areas.
Remember, whenever venturing into the outdoors, practice the Leave No Trace principles and be considerate of others. This means: dispose of your waste properly, don't remove things or move things from their natural position and respect all wildlife. Also be sure to plan ahead and adequately prepare for any adventure.
