Lamington National Park (Green Mountains)
A magnificent walk through Toolona Gorge, with multiple creek crossings, a seemingly countless number of amazing waterfalls and multiple lookouts.
This moderately trafficked walk starts from the main trailhead of the Green Mountains section of Lamington National Park, across from the O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat reception.
The well-marked trail begins along the Border Track, before branching off and following signs for the Toolona Creek Circuit.
The walk features numerous waterfalls, including Chalahn Falls, Toolona Falls, Gwongurai Falls, Triple Falls, Burraboomba Falls, Yilgahn Falls, Poojabinya Falls, Wongboola Falls and Dwandarra Falls. A short side-track to Elabana Falls (on the Box Forest Circuit) is also highly recommended.
The track hugs the creek for much of the middle section of the walk and there are several creek crossings to be navigated.
The circuit also returns along the Border Track. At the junction of the Toolona Creek circuit and the Border Track, a short detour to Wanungra Lookout is recommended. On your way back to Green Mountains, you’ll also pass Bithongabel Lookout.
Track: Graded and relatively well-signed. For the most part, easy to follow, however care should be taken at creek crossings to locate the track on the other side. The descent and ascent into and out of the forest is via a number of gradual switchbacks.
Difficulty: The length and elevation gain earn this track a hard rating, however the ascent is gradual and the numerous waterfalls and lookouts allow plenty of breaks. Care should be taken at creek crossings as the rocks can be slippery, especially after rain.
Direction: While the track can be completed in either direction, it is recommended to do the track clockwise.
getting there
The walk is located in the Green Mountains section of Lamington National Park, at the end of Lamington National Park Road in Canungra, at the location of O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, 2 hours drive south of Brisbane.
The walk starts from the main trailhead, across from the O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat reception, where the Lamington National Park arch is.
Parking is ample, however the car park can become extremely busy, especially on weekends.
best time to go
The walk can be completed year-round.
Given the time required to complete the walk it is advised to start early.
Like all walks involving waterfalls, they are best done after recent rain, however, be sure to check the Queensland Parks website for updates regarding flooding and track closures, especially given the numerous creek crossings on this track.
Remember, whenever venturing into the outdoors, practice the Leave No Trace principles and be considerate of others. This means: dispose of your waste properly, don't remove things or move things from their natural position and respect all wildlife. Also be sure to plan ahead and adequately prepare for any adventure.
