A short but beautiful walk that packs plenty of punch, boasting breathtaking lookouts, spectacular waterfalls and dense rainforest.
The ideal starting spot for this heavily trafficked walk is Canyon Lookout, which offers breathtaking views into the valley and across the cliff line dotted with waterfalls, including the prominent Rainbow Falls.
The walk then descends from the plateau into the depths of the forest, following signs for Twin Falls.
The walk features numerous waterfalls, including the namesake Twin Falls, Tallanbana Falls and Blackfellow Falls, of which you can walk behind the curtain of both the former and latter. Tamarramai Falls can also be found on the trail but is typically just a trickle.
As you approach Twin Falls there is a fork in the path. While both routes get you to the falls, veering left will take you through an amazing rock cleft.
As you walk through the rainforest in the valley, along the base of the cliffs of the plateau, you pass a number of interesting overhangs.
As you trek back to the starting point along the plateau, you’ll be rewarded with two more lookouts with views to the Gold Coast skyline and Springbrook Pinnacle.
Track: Graded and well-signed, with steps, railings and asphalt paths at times. The track is easy to follow, however care should be taken to choose the right direction at the junctions with the much longer Warrie Circuit (the junctions are located near Twin Falls and at the base of Blackfellow Falls and are well signposted). The descent and ascent into and out of the forest is via a number of steep switchbacks and steps.
Difficulty: The track is suitable for all fitness levels, however does include a short, steep descent and ascent into and out of the valley.
Direction: While the track can be completed in either direction, anti-clockwise is recommended if you want to arrive at Twin Falls earlier.
getting there
The trail can be started from the Tallanbana Picnic Area on Springbrook Road or from the Canyon Lookout on Canyon Parade in Springbrook, 1.5 hours drive south of Brisbane.
Parking at Canyon Lookout is very limited, but more ample at the picnic area. Both car parks can become extremely busy, especially on weekends.
best time to go
The walk can be completed year-round.
An early start on a weekend or a weekday visit is advised.
Like all walks involving waterfalls, they are best done after recent rain, however be sure to check the Queensland Parks website for updates regarding flooding and track closures.
Remember, whenever venturing into the outdoors, practice the Leave No Trace principles and be considerate of others. This means: dispose of your waste properly, don't remove things or move things from their natural position and respect all wildlife. Also be sure to plan ahead and adequately prepare for any adventure.
